European Music Day 11th Edition
What is European Music Day? Nothing less than the country’s biggest open air, entrance-free musical gathering! A true celebration dedicated to Music, Musicians, our cities and their people. A celebration that brings people together, offering them a chance to enjoy sounds and images from all over the world. People all over the country are having the privilege of enjoying a huge range of musical styles. At the same time, hundreds of artists are being given the chance to present their work to a diverse audience.
This year, between the 19th and 21st of June you are bound to run into them in one of the numerous of stages that will be set in 22 cities all over Greece. Music grows out in the streets anyway. The only thing you need to do is listen up and enjoy it.
International Acts
In its ten years so far, European Music Day had had the pleasure of hosting a variety of international acts. British, American, French, African, Balkan, representing a vast music range, these artists have all played a part in the European Music Day history. Hard as it may be to pick out any of these live performances, one can’t help but give special mention to acts such as Nick Warren’s Way Out West, NouvelleVague, ScissorSisters, NenehCherry, Birdy Nam Nam and Shantel, to name but a few. For its eleventh edition European Music Day is back, bigger than ever, presenting you with interesting and exciting new acts.
Le Peuple de l’ Herbe – they have been around for 10 years already but still the French Le Peuple de l’Herbe remain difficult to categorize. They formed in 1997 on the hills of the Croix-Rousse district of Lyon and their work was heard for the first time on the soundtrack of Virginie Despentes’ cult film “Baise-Moi”. Then followed their debut album “Triple Zero” which caught the press attention. The public loved the delicate alchemy of the band: funny samples, ferocious instruments, surprising electro, powerful dubs and breakbeats. Later works included the 2002 “Ph Test Two”, the 2004“Cube”, which many consider their best album to date, the more organic “Blood Money” of 2005, their “Live” album of 2008 and the more recent one, “Tilt”. Throughout their course though there are some things that have remained their same: their habit of relentlessly breaking all barriers between music genres (there are traces of African influences, hip-hop, cinematic instrumentals, rock’n’roll classics, post-punk and dub), their DIY aesthetics (they record in their own studio “Supadope Factory) as well as their lyrics’ political and social references.
Dan Le Sac VS Scroobius Pip – the exceptional electronica / funk / hip hop British duo. Releasing their first album, entitled "Angels", in 2008 they debuted right on uk’s top 30 chart, thanks mainly to Scroobiu’s characteristic voice and their heretical first single “ThouShalt Always Kill”. For those of you who don’t remember it was the track boldly proclaiming that Nirvana, thePixies, Oasis and the Smiths, among many others, where nothing more that “just a band”. They have appeared in major festivals such as Glastonbury (2007 & 2009) and are famous for their feel good sound and sense of humour.
Ez A Divat – their name means “this is fashion”. One of the first bands experimenting with mixing electronic music and jazz, Ez a Divat released their debut album “From the Head to the Feet” in 2006, to favorable reviews. Their second, funkier and more danceable release “Hello form the Neitherlands” gained them an even bigger audience and even celebrity fans such as Kid Loco. Their latest release We Felt so Mixed up in the Neitherlands is a full length remix LP featuring the remixes of Hello from Neitherlands from such internationally acclaimed artists from all over Europe as Flevans, Lack of Afro, Badboe and Jon Kennedy.
Fallulah – ethereal, refined, irresistibly pop, Fallulahis visiting us all the way from Denmark, with the support of the Danish Institute of Athens, bringing along her first album “TheBlackCatNeighborhood”. Having been released in February 2010, “The Black Cat Neighbourhood” quickly turned Fallulah to Denmark’s favourite new act, also obtaining her a place in this year’s Roskilde Festival line up. Thanks to her signature sound filled with pop, electro, rock, even jazz and folk elements, critics are already calling 24 year old Fallulah, the “Scandinavian Bat for Lashes”.
Kingdom Of Lord Owl aka K.O.L.O. - Having released their debut album “Songs for a Sleepwalker” in 2008, the Swiss band has been touring extensively in Europe and America ever since. In their words their music is a “mixture of light pop/ folk and explosive rock n roll”. They share their time between New York and Paris where they are currently working on their new album.
Masta Pi – a rising figure of Belgian hip hop, Masta Pi has managed to make a name of himself in many European countries during the last few years and even win recognition in the eclectic French hip hop scene. He became initially known as a founding member of prominent hip hop bands such as the “Associates”, “Les Ecrit 20” and “DAK”, but will be arriving in Greece alone to present us with his first solo album.
